Miami was officially incorporated as a city on July 28, 1896, with a voting population of just over 300. In 1940, 172,172 people lived in the city. According to the 2000 census, the city proper had a population of 362,470, while the larger metropolitan area had a population over 5.4 million. The U.S. Census Bureau estimate of the population of Miami in 2006 was 391,355.********************Miami's explosive population growth in recent years has been driven by internal migration from other parts of the country as well as by immigration. Tuttle’s husband, Frederick Tuttle, died in 1886, and she decided to move to South Florida due to the “delicate health” of her children. She and William Brickell tried to get railroad magnate Henry Flagler to expand his rail line, the Florida East Coast Railroad, southward to the area, but he initially declined.

However, in the winter of 1894, Florida was struck by cold weather that destroyed virtually the entire citrus crop in the state. A few months later on the night of February 7, 1895, Florida was hit by another freeze. That freeze wiped out whatever crops survived the first one, and the new trees. Unlike the rest of the state, Miami was unaffected, and Tuttle's citrus became the only citrus on the market that year. Tuttle wrote to Flagler again, persuading him to visit the area and to see it for himself. Flagler did so, and concluded at the end of his first day that the area was ripe for expansion. In her memoirs (Moi, mes histoires, 2006) RÃ©gine admitted she was displeased with the fact that customers kept selecting slow pieces of music from the juke-box and then spent the time on the dance-floor covering partners with wet kisses, boring everybody around. RÃ©gine also covered the dance-floor with grease every day before guests arrived, to make dancing more challenging.

However, if one were to visit the island of Ibiza, they would find some of the most serious House and Trance clubs found in the world. Despite this, house music seems to enjoy universal popularity at dance clubs all over Europe. In the U.S., the largest and most intense nightclubs are those found in New York, Miami, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. The music that fuels these non-stop parties can range from Hip-hop, Reggaeton, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Reggae, Hard House, Vocal Trance, or Hard Trance.----------------In the U.S., the repeal of Prohibition in February 1933 sparked the revival of nightclubs, which had gone underground as speakeasies. In New York City, three famous Midtown nightclubs from the "Golden Age" were the Stork Club, El Morocco and the Copacabana, while uptown in Harlem the Cotton Club was king.

Before 1953 and even some years thereafter, most speakeasies bars and nightclubs used jukebox or mostly live bands but then in a Paris club named Whisky Ã Gogo, RÃ©gine laid down a dance-floor, suspended coloured lights and for the first time ever replaced the juke-box with two turntables which she operated herself so there would be no breaks between the music, setting into place the standard elements of the discothÃ¨que as known in its modern form. In her memoirs (Moi, mes histoires, 2006) RÃ©gine admitted she was displeased with the fact that customers kept selecting slow pieces of music from the juke-box and then spent the time on the dance-floor covering partners with wet kisses, boring everybody around. RÃ©gine also covered the dance-floor with grease every day before guests arrived, to make dancing more challenging.

The first rock and roll generation did not favor nightclubs, but the club returned in the 1970s as the "disco," from the French discothÃ¨que (although by the early 1980s, the term "disco" had largely fallen out of favor in North America). Two early discos in New York were "Le Club" and "Regine's." Today in Europe, nightclubs play techno, house music or any sort of dance music from nu-jazz to electro or trance for the most part. Most nightclubs in the U.S. major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and San Francisco play house and trance music. These clubs are generally the largest and most frequented of all of the different types of clubs.
